Two Sections Of Weaving A Chair

If you want to weave your seat, we have prepared two sections on how to weave a chair.

Section #1. Weave the warp

Step #1. Gather the materials

When you do this type of DIY to your chair, the materials you’ll need are cheap. Here are the following materials that we suggest that you should have during the process:

Step #2. Tie the first half to one of the horizontal seats

Start on any side of the seat. Tie a knot and slide it to one corner. Now you have a starting point of your warp or first round of jute.

You’ll need to learn how to do a clove hitch which will serve as your beginning knot. Click here to watch the video.

Note: The majority of the cord should be at the opposite end of the knot. Make sure to keep it together with the large ball of jute cord.

Step #3. Put the 1″ spacer across the seat perpendicular to the knot

The spacer will keep space in the weave when you start the first direction. It’ll make your task easier to weave the opposite side.

Step #4. Wrap the cord around the whole width of the chair

When you wrap it around, you’ll then go back to your starting point. Take the cord and lay it on the spacer, over the opposite seat edge. Then go underneath everything to your starting point. (One loop)

Note: Don’t pull as tight as possible. It needs to be tight enough for the shape.

Step #5. Keep the string from overlapping

Keep the string from overlapping, then wrap the cord around everything four times. It’ll be best if you start at the edge of the seat you tied the knot. Lay the cord on top of the spacer, over the opposite edge, then go back underneath where you started.

Note: Push the strings close together, then repeat the process.

Step #6. Individually wrap the seat’s edge to create a spacer

Wrap the cord once around the seat’s opposite edge as your starting side.

Step #7. Run the cord to the opposite side

You’ll run the rope to the other side, and then you’ll wrap the first edge once it creates a second spacer. Go back to the beginning and wrap it around with the cord around the horizontal seat edge.

Step #8. Slide the strings close together to avoid crisscross

If you start everything to the right side of your seat, slide everything to the right. You should have a set of parallel strings on the seat. This string includes the ff:

  • String-wrapped around the edge to create a spacer
  • String-wrapped for the clove hitch
  • String-weaved across the other side of the seat

Step #9. Repeat the process of the horizontal wrap

Repeat the process of the horizontal wraps until you cover the chair. This process continues until one is done.

Note: Once done with one side, lock it. Use the clove hitch.

Section #2. Weave opposite side

Step #1. Wrap the remainder of your jute cord to your shuttles

If you don’t know what a shuttle is, this material is a thin yarn holder that you slide in your weave that makes the task easier to achieve a tight weave.

Step #2. Work with a larger spacer into warp

The spacer will pass over every other group of strings. You’ll need to pick up the first five strings and slide the spacer underneath them. Then, slide this material on top of the following five strings.

Note: Process needs to be alternated to have a ladder-like pattern.

Step #3. Turn the seat upside-down and repeat steps

Read the instructions in the first section of the article. It’ll be easy for you to do this process again.

Step #4. Start cord on a larger shuttle, then tie it down to the seat’s edge with another clove hitch

Start perpendicularly to your first set of the weave. It doesn’t matter where you’d like to start.

Step #5. Wrap the cord around the width of the chair

Use the shuttle to slide under the lifted string. You’ll be doing the same process in section 1, step 8. It’ll help create a checkered pattern that you’re trying to accomplish. Repeat process.

Step #6. Use a crochet hook to weave the final strands manually

Pull the weave through using the crochet hook to get to the center and pull up and down every five strings.

Note: Cut the excess and clean any loose threads.
