Accurate Curtain Yardage: The Simple Formula

If you’re looking for a quick and simple way to calculate the curtain yardage needed for your curtains, then this blog post is for you!

A lot goes into figuring out how much fabric you need, but it’s not as complicated as it might seem. In this article, we will give you all the information that you need to be able to figure out how many yards of fabric are needed on your own.

Step by step guide on Measuring Curtain Yardage

Step #1. Measure your window height and width to determine how wide of a panel you’ll need. This will give you the number of panels that you require (width divided by 12). For example, if the curtain needs to be 48 inches wide then divide this by 12 for an answer of four panels.

Step #2. Your fabric should measure approximately one and a half inches wider than your measurements. For example, if you need four panels that are 48 in width then add one and a half inches to each panel for an answer of 51 in.

Step #3. Measure the length from top to bottom of your window; divide this by two (for how many pieces you’ll need) and subtract six inches. This will give you the length of your panels.

For example, if it is a standard window that measures 40 inches from top to bottom then divide this by two for an answer of 20 in; subtract six (for how many inches should be left on each panel) and get 14 in as an answer.

Step #4. Measure across the width of your window and divide by two to get the width of your panels.

Step #5. To figure out how many yards you need, multiply the width (14) by how long you want your curtains to be and divide this number by 36 inches to find how much yardage is needed.

For example, if I want my curtain length to be 84 inches then 14 times 84 equals 1176 which is divided by 36 is 34 yards.

PS: Keep in mind that most curtains are 120 inches long; 40 inches wide and have six-inch linings on each side so the calculations above need to be adjusted accordingly: for example, if you want your curtain length 84in then 14 times 48 equals 680 which divided by 36 is 17.25 yards.

PSS: The formula is: yards needed = (curtains length x curtains width) divided by 36.

What is the Best Fabric Material for curtains?

Fabric is a personal preference but there are some things to consider. Is the fabric colorfast and considered stain-resistant? Can you wash it in your washing machine?

Does this fabric have any sheen or texture? How well does this material hold up when being pulled on for months at a time, such as with children’s curtains that may need to be closed and opened frequently?

One last consideration is how much light does this fabric allows. If a room needs more natural sunlight, then choosing heavier curtains may not work well for you because they will block out most of the sun’s rays. On the other hand, darker fabrics are often appropriate when trying to keep in heat during the winter months.

On the opposite side, lighter fabrics can be appropriate when trying to keep in heat during the summer months. So what’s best for you? That’s up to your preference and how much light or warmth is needed in that room at this time of year.

Can I Bleach my curtain material?

Yes, you can bleach your fabric and curtains if the manufacturer allows them. However, make sure to follow any instructions that come with their product because they may have specific requirements for how often you need to launder them or what temperature water must be used when washing them.

What is the best way to store my curtain?

The best way to store your curtains is by rolling them up tightly and storing them in a large plastic bag. You should make sure they are not touching each other or anything else because this will cause damage over time. If you want to get more creative, some people use old-school curtain rods as storage racks for their rolled-up curtains!

How to Care for Curtain?

To clean your curtains, you should use a mild detergent and the lowest water temperature possible. You should avoid using bleach because it will remove any color that may be left in the fabric.

We recommend washing them alone to prevent fading or staining from other fabrics. To dry your shower curtain with this process, you can hang dry for maximum effect or dry on a low-heat setting with the door open to allow water vapor to escape.

How Long Does it Take for Curtain Drying?

Depending on how wet your curtains are, you can expect drying times anywhere from 12 hours up to 36 hours if they were soaked. We recommend hanging them in a well-ventilated room or outside on a clothesline if possible to help expedite the drying process.

How Often Should You Wash Your Curtains?

Ideally, we recommend washing your curtains about once every two months. During these times you should vacuum them and use a mild detergent in hot water at the lowest temperature setting, given that this will be gentler on your curtains.

Why should you clean your curtains?

There are a few reasons why it’s important to keep up with regular curtain cleaning: first, they’ll last longer; second, dust and allergens can build up quickly in the fabric of the drapes or lining making them more likely to trigger allergies; and third, dirt can stain the fabric or lining.
