Well, I had trouble at first with long curtains, but that was replaced with enthusiasm when I read about the different ways to fix a long curtain up.

I will teach them to you, so you better get ready.

Ways To Fix Long Curtains

Curtains can be so pricey, especially if you got made-to-order curtains.

But with your little sewing knowledge, it could help a lot in your budget.

So how to fix curtains that are too long?

These simple ways will bring charm in every way.

Method #1. Using Curtain Clips

A way to reduce your curtain’s length is with the use of curtain clips which are to be attached to hooks or rings.

These curtain clips have either long or short alligator clips that could pin the curtains in place.

Using more clips will make the curtains look more pleated.

Nevertheless, you can still use nine clips so that you can save on the cost.

Method #2. Hem

Another way to fix a long curtain is to put hems on it.

If you have no idea of what a hem is, ahem is a folded piece of fabric at the bottom of the curtain.

There are two ways of making a hem on your curtain.

That includes sewing and non-sewing methods:

No-sew hem

No-sew hems are suitable for those who don’t know how to sew or don’t have the time.

Using n stick-on iron tape will undoubtedly do the trick.

All you have to do is purchase one from the department stores near you or get one online.

These stick-on solutions will require fabrics that are heat resistant.

Some fabrics aren’t just cut out for heating elements, so this makes them an exception in this method.

All you have to do is to measure the desired length of the curtain. Then fold it to find the edge of the fabric.

Fold the excess in half and attach strips of stick-on tape. Some tapes have adhesive on one side and paper on the other.

You’re going to stick the strips and peel out the paper on the other side.

Make sure to attach the folded hem neatly to avoid unnecessary peeling off.

Then using iron for clothes, gently iron the folded hems to ensure that the tape sticks well.

Advantages:
  • Easy to use
  • Have neat appearance
  • No sewing needed

Disadvantages:
  • Messy to remove
  • Costly
  • Not suitable for shower curtains

Sewn hem

Another way of incorporating hems into long curtains involves sewing.

You could either sew it by hand or sew it using a sewing machine.

To make one, measure the desired curtain length.

Fold the edges into two folds. Attach pins to pin the fabric in place.

Make sure that the pins are a half-inch away from the edges.

That is to give space for sewing later.

If you are using a sewing machine, sew the hem from end to end.

To make t neat, sew it at an eighth inch away from the edge of the fold.

But if you don’t have a sewing machine, you can always sew it by hand.

You just got to know about basic sewing.

You could either use backstitch or do the basting.

These basic stitches, once mastered, will work in many things.

Advantages:
  • For long-term remedy
  • Not easily torn
  • Durable
Disadvantages:
  • Not as neat as iron-on tapes
  • Time-consuming

Make a rod pocket

Another way to shorten a long curtain is to add a header or a rod pocket.

You can use this to slip the rod right it.

Adding another rod pocket can give you another choice of hanging the curtain using a rod.

Fold the curtain down twice from the top and pin it using sewing pins to keep it in place.

You could either sew it by hand or with the use of a sewing machine; you can also use the stick-on iron method mentioned above.

My Experience

I’ve loved to alter my curtains at home because I have a mini sewing machine at my house.

Based on my experience, sewn hems worked for me best because since I have a sewing machine, why not use it?

Most of my curtains are longer than they should be to have them adjusted to have the correct size.

Now, I have all the power to make my curtain hems.

So try the ways that I have mentioned above and let me know how it went for you.

Conclusion

Knowing how to fix curtains that are too long could save you some bucks than having them made by a pro.

All you need is a basic knowledge of the things that you should know.

Not only will you save money but have fun too.
