Distress it to make it appear vintage. Sand the piece’s surface. You can sand it lightly. You can also smooth out any sharp edges or corners. After sanding, wipe the work down with a rag or tack cloth to remove dust and dirt.

If you want the piece to appear to have been previously painted, purchase two paint colors so that the base color shows through when the top player is distressed.
You can use a single paint color if you want the wood to show through. Paint the entire piece, and if necessary, apply a second coat. Allow the paint to completely dry.
Step 10
If you want a second color to show through the finished product, rub the painted piece with a candle in various areas, including the edges and corners. Because the second coat of paint will not adhere to the wax, it will be easy to remove.
Paint the second color over the entire piece, including the waxed areas.
Step 11
I am using sandpaper and steel wool to distress the piece. Next, you can apply a stain to the work to give it an antiqued appearance. Apply one coat of paint and then wipe away the excess with a rag. Instead of rubbing in a circle, use a straight motion. Finally, allow the stain to dry completely.
And Seal the piece with clear polyurethane to protect the color.
