Steps to Recovering a Recliner

Step One: Identify the type of fabric you would like to recover your recliner.

Nylon, cotton, wool, and polyester are all great options for this project!

Step Two: Find a place that sells fabric in bulk or by yards.  This will be cheaper than buying it from an individual store where prices are per yard.

Make sure you know the measurements of your recliner so that you can purchase enough fabric!

Step Three: Purchase a sewing machine and all other necessary supplies, including a staple gun or upholstery tacks for attaching the padding to your chair frame.  While it is possible to sew on this project without one, this will cause the process to take longer.

A good quality sewing machine is going to be more expensive than a less expensive one, but it can save you time and frustration in the long run!  When purchasing supplies like scissors or needles, make sure that they are durable enough for your project so that they last through all of your hard work.

Step Four: The number of supplies needed will vary depending on how you are recovering your chair. For example, if it has a seat back and armrests that can be removed or reattached, then there is no need for upholstery tacks to attach the padding to those parts of the frame.

If it does not have any upholstery tacks or does not have a seat back, armrests, then you will need to buy upholstery tacks and tack the foam padding in place.

Make sure that your sewing machine is plugged in before beginning this project! You should also use scissors to cut any loose threads on the furniture frame with an electric knife if you have one.

You need to measure and cut the foam padding with a sharp blade or scissors, as well as prepare any upholstery tacks that you might need beforehand.

Step Five: Start by measuring your furniture frame for how much material you will need. Cut out the appropriate size of foam padding using a straight edge and sharp knife or scissors.

Attach the foam padding to the furniture frame using upholstery tacks and a tack hammer, starting from one end of your sofa chair or armchair then continuing along with more tacks until you reach the other side of it.

If there are any small tears in your foam padding material that have opened due to being cut, use a small piece of the adhesive tape to seal them.

Now you can cover it with the desired fabric or upholstery, using either tacks or staples if your material is thin enough. Start by placing an even row of tacks at the top edge and then continue covering each side until all sides are done to prepare for the next step.

Step Six: Hanging the material over each side and stapling it to its frame with a staple gun, starting from one end of your sofa chair or armchair then continuing along with more staples until you reach the other side of it.

If there are any small tears in your fabric that have opened due to being cut,  use a small piece of the adhesive tape to seal them.

Step Seven: Once you have covered the frame completely, fold over and staple down any excess material that is not being used around this side. Now repeat these steps on the opposite end so that both sides are done for it to be ready for use again.
