How do I create a memory album?
The first step is to gather photos, newspaper clippings, postcards, certificates and other memorabilia that you would like to include in your album.
The next step is to decide on the pages for each period or event in the life of your relative(s). For example a person’s birth year or a historical event such as WWII.
You can create a simple timeline using index cards with dates written on them then add photos and artefacts associated with those dates. I found it helpful to use colored index cards so my categories are easier to see when laid out together on a table (or floor!).
In this way, you can easily rearrange as needed until you have decided upon which periods/events will be included in your album.
Once you have your pages designed, it is time to start scanning and printing your photos! If you are going the digital route, make sure to save all of your scans in a format that can be easily opened on different computers (i.e. JPEG).
I like to use an online photo album site like Shutterfly or Picasa to store my scanned photos along with the original copies of any memorabilia I am including in my physical album. This way if anything happens to my physical copy of the album, I still have everything backed-up online.
Another helpful hint: when creating your memory album consider using a scrapbooking software program like Adobe Photoshop Elements or My Memories Suite which will allow you more creative control over your finished product.
