How to Make Sheer Curtains For French Doors

If you want to make your home look more elegant and expensive than it already is, then adding curtains to french doors may be the answer. Many people don’t know how to sew or have the time for such a project, but this DIY tutorial will how to make sheer curtains for french doors!

How to Make Sheer Curtains For French Doors

Step on Making Sheer Curtains For French Doors

Step One: Gather all the materials you need for your project, including fabric, thread, and needles. The amount of fabric needed depends on the length or width of your french doors; it’s best to have extra just in case any mistakes happen while sewing. You can find sheer polyester fabrics at most craft stores like Michael’s Arts & Crafts or Hobby Lobby.

Step Two: Measure the width and length of your french doors, then divide that number by two. For example, if your french door is 24 inches wide and 48 inches long, you would need to sew a piece of fabric 16 x 36 for it to work on both sides of the curtain rod.

Step Three: Cut out the fabric, add a hem on both of the short ends and then sew it together. It is important to remember that when you are sewing up one side of the curtain rod, you will need enough length so there’s an extra inch or two for each panel to hang down from your french door.

Step Four: If you want to make them look more like french doors, which is what I did in my project, then measure the length of your door and cut out a rectangle with that measurement. Sew up two opposite sides (the top and bottom), leaving enough room for it to hang down from the curtain rod.

What Are Sheer Curtains?

Sheer curtains are a type of window treatment that can be used to add privacy or light control while still allowing the natural light and atmosphere into your room.

They work by using layers of fabric, some with designs on them for more style options and personality, each providing different levels of opacity. Sometimes they’re called “lace” because the sheer fabric looks like the lace you can see through.

How to Make Sheer Curtains with a Pattern:

Step One: Measure your windows and cut out two pieces of fabric, one for each window pane. (Leave some room on the edges so that it will fit nicely over your existing curtains).

Step Two: Iron both fabrics.

Step Three: Sew the two pieces together, with right sides facing in, and then turn it out so that you can see the pattern on each one as well as on both layers when they’re joined.

Step Four: Iron your seams again to flatten them out, before hemming around all four edges of the curtain.

Step Five: The final step is to hang your new curtains on the curtain rods. You can also add a rod pocket at the top of each panel for extra support.

The Benefits of Sheer Curtains

Sheer curtains are not only beautiful, but they’re versatile as well – perfect for any room in your house. They can be hung in a doorway as a window treatment, or as a sheer backdrop for your bedspread and pillows.

Sheer curtains are an effective solution to keeping out the sun’s glare on hot summer days without sacrificing light inside your home – perfect when you want to keep your living room cool but still need some natural sunlight.

Sheer curtains also offer privacy without blocking out the beautiful view outside. If you live by a busy street, or if your backyard is on display for passersby to see, sheer curtains are worth considering as they can give you some peace of mind and help bring down the temperature in your home when it’s hot outside.

In addition to these practical uses, sheer curtains are also a great element for decorating your home.

How to Care For Sheer Curtains

Sheer curtains do require some care – but it’s not difficult and only requires a few steps. The first thing you should know is that sun and heat are the enemies of any fabric, so when your sheer curtains aren’t in use they can be best stored away from windows or doors to prevent fading due to direct exposure to sunlight.

How to Wash Sheer Curtains

To keep your sheers looking great, they will need to be cleaned from time to time. You can either use a professional dry-cleaning service or do it at home with the following steps:

Step One – Fill a sink with cold water and add about ¼ cup of liquid fabric softener (you could also substitute shampoo for this).

Step Two – Add your curtains to the sink and allow them to soak for about ten minutes.

Step Three – Gently squeeze out water from the curtain, but avoid wringing it or twisting it too much (this will cause wrinkles)

Step Four – Lay your sheers flat on a towel in an area with good ventilation (use a clothesline or hangers if you can).

Step Five – Let the sheers air dry for about two hours. Your curtain is now clean!
