That is because you are going to handle them more frequently as opposed to window curtains.

What Are The Things Needed?

Before we proceed to the steps in making doorway curtains, let us first go over the things that you need to prepare to get the job done.

Here is the list:

Steps To Make Doorway Curtains

You can step up your typical doorway by hanging a pretty curtain.

To be able to do that, follow the steps below.

So, how to make doorway curtains?

Step #1. Measuring the width

First, you need to measure how wide the door is opening.

You don’t need to include the trim in getting the measurement.

Step #2. Measuring the height

Also, measure how tall the door opening is.

You have to decide whether you want to hang the curtain onto the door opening itself or right on top of the trim.

This is if you will use a tension rod.

Once you have decided, measure the height accordingly.

Step #3. Marking for the width

Using fabric chalk, mark the desired width to cut off.

Ensure to add an inch allowance to every cut edge. This will be allotted for the hemming.

In case you want to make two curtain panels instead of one only, you have to decide on the width.

Divide it by two and add half an inch to every side edge of the curtains.

Step #4. Marking for the length

Now, mark for the desired length of the fabric using chalk.

Add about six inches to be allotted for the top header and the rod pocket.

Then, add another six inches to be allotted for the bottom hem.

In case the curtain rod has a diameter of greater than one, you will need to increase the rod pocket sizing.

To do this, double the rod diameter and add one inch for the top header.

Double that amount again to figure out how long do you need to add to the length of the fabric for the rod pocket.

Step #5. Cutting the fabric

Now you can start cutting along the lines you marked with chalk in the previous steps.

Iron the fabric so it will become very smooth.

Step #6. Folding the edges

Lay your fabric on a flat surface with the right side facing downwards.

Then fold about half an inch along the sides of the cut edges.

As you do this, the right side of your fabric will show. Iron to make a crease.

Fold another half an inch along the turned edges moving towards the same direction as earlier to hide the cut side completely.

Then iron the fold and pin in place.

Step #7. Sewing the hem

Start sewing the fabric straightly near the edges of the hem you folded earlier.

Both ends of the fabric seams must be back stitched.

Do the same to all the other long edges of your fabric. Make sure to trim the ends of the thread.

Step #8. Making the top pocket

Fold over the top of the fabric for about three inches so the right side will show.

Double fold the fabric to hide the cut edge completely.

Then iron the top fold and pin it in place.

Now start sewing along the edges you folded earlier to make the top pocket.

Step #9. Making the top header

Measure about an inch across the fabric width starting from the top towards the bottom of the curtain.

Then mark a reference line using chalk.

Begin sewing the marked line to make the top header of your curtain. The rod pocket is right below this.

Ensure to backstitch on both ends to secure the seams. Then, trim excess threads.

But in case you do not prefer a header with a ruffled look, proceed to the next step.

Step #10. Sewing the bottom hem

Now fold up the bottom of the fabric for about two inches or half the measurement of the seam allowance.

Iron the fold into place and double-fold fabric for the same width to hide the cut edge completely.

Iron again and pin in place.

Sew the hem at the bottom of the curtain along the edges you just folded.

Ensure to backstitch at the ends of the seam and trim any excess threads.

Step #11. Finishing the curtain

Again, trim all ends of the threads if needed. Then iron your finished doorway curtains

And that’s it!

You can already hang the curtains onto the curtain rod you installed on your door opening.

It’s A Wrap!

Congratulations, you finally know how to make doorway curtains!

Now, you can step up your décor.

Happy sewing, folks!
