How To Make A Naked Wedding Cake At Home

For this tiered buttercream naked wedding cake, prepare the following ingredients:

To make an 8-inch cake layer:

-6 eggs

-425 grams of sifted flour

-3 teaspoons of baking powder

-5 tablespoons of hot water

-275 grams of softened unsalted butter

-375 grams of caster sugar

-1 tablespoon of vanilla paste

-2 teaspoons of vanilla extract

-oil for greasing baking pans

Note: bake two cakes to make a tier for the naked wedding cake

To make a 10-inch cake layer:

-10 eggs

-750 grams of sifted flour

-5 teaspoons of baking powder

-10 tablespoons of hot water

-500 grams of softened unsalted butter

-650 grams of caster sugar

-2 tablespoon of vanilla paste

-1 tablespoon of vanilla extract

-oil for greasing baking pans

Note: bake two cakes to make a tier for the naked wedding cake

To make the wedding cake syrup and buttercream icing:

-550 ml water

-550 grams of caster sugar

-flavor of your choice

-4 pounds of icing sugar

-2 pounds of softened unsalted butter

-3 tablespoons of milk

-2 tablespoons of vanilla extract

-2 jars of berry jam

Step 1. Bake the cake layers

  • Preheat the oven to 356°F for the naked wedding cake layers
  • Prepare the baking tins with parchment paper and oil
  • Mix the vanilla bean paste, vanilla extract, butter, and sugar until fluffy, then add the eggs one at a time
  • Stir in a tablespoon of flour if you notice curdling
  • Fold in the baking powder, flour, and water into the batter
  • Mix until the cake batter is smooth and pour into their baking tins
  • Smoothen the top and bake the cakes: the 8-inch cakes will be good for 1 hour and 15 minutes, while the 10-inch cakes should take an hour and 40 minutes
  • Test the cake by poking the center with a toothpick until it comes out clean
  • Cool for 15 minutes and transfer onto the wire rack

Step 2. Make the syrup and buttercream icing

  • Naked wedding cakes are so-called because they are not covered in frosting; instead, you’ll make a flavored syrup of your choice and stack them with buttercream icing
  • To make the naked cake’s syrup, stir sugar and water on low heat in a large pan
  • Boil the syrup for a minute and let it cool
  • Add flavoring of your choice if you want
  • For the buttercream, you will beat butter and add the icing sugar in portions
  • Add vanilla extract and beat until fluffy
  • Add milk to the buttercream frosting to create a better spreadable consistency

Step 3. Assemble the naked wedding cake

  • After you have made the tiers, syrup, and frosting, it’s time to assemble the naked wedding cake
  • Making a naked wedding cake is easy since you don’t need to cover its exterior; the challenge would be assembling the tiers with dowels
  • Level each cake if needed with a serrated knife
  • Slice each cake in half slowly to create multiple layers that will make up a tier
  • Brush the cakes with syrup until absorbed
  • Spread a bit of buttercream on the cake board so the bottom cake layer will sit over it
  • Spread buttercream over the top of each cake, then add jam on the tap
  • Stack each cake over each other and insert dowels onto the bottom tier to create a smaller circle than the tier over it
  • Finish the assembly at the wedding venue and refer to how to make a two-tiered wedding cake for stacking tips

What Is A Naked Wedding Cake?

A naked cake is so-called because it has no frosting on the exterior. However, it still has a flavor because the tiered cake is stacked with filling and sometimes brushed with syrup.

A naked wedding cake is ideal for a modern wedding cake table because of its rustic and aesthetic look. There is also a nearly naked wedding cake where a small amount of frosting is swiped on the sides

How Do You Make Naked Cake Icing?

Buttercream is usually the icing on naked cakes and is used between the cake layers. Some recipes also use syrup when making a naked wedding cake to add more flavor.

Another alternative for a true naked cake icing is whipped cream, where you can add almond extract, chocolate, coffee, lemon, orange, or coconut extract. You can use this in between your cake layers not just for flavor but also for aesthetics.

Basic whipped cream icing for naked cakes:

  1. Whisk 2 cups of cold heavy cream, 40 grams of confectioner’s sugar, a teaspoon of vanilla extract, and half a teaspoon of a flavor extract of your choice
  2. Beat on medium-high speed until peaks form for three minutes
  3. Chill in the fridge for 24 hours
