Step 1: Taking measurements
As tempting as it may seem, let me be the first to say that you cannot just clip the rings onto your curtains and leave them be. Sure, it will hold the fabric up, but irregularly placed clips along the fabric’s top will simply result in a messy and rather displeasing look.
Get your tape measure and fabric pencil or marker ready. Measure the entire width of your curtain using your tape measure. Divide its width by four and make a mark to separate each section. In standard methods, you can typically attach the clips at intervals of four inches.
Step 2: Mark your fabric
Use your tape measure and line it along the top part of the curtain. Carefully mark the 4-inch interval per panel. You can adjust the width of intervals however you like, but we will use four inches for this guide.
Try to use light pencils or fabric markers that don’t easily bleed into the curtain’s other side. Otherwise, the ink will appear visible at the front and make the curtain look tainted or stained. Some marker inks can also be quite difficult to remove, especially on white fabric.
Step 3: Attach the clips.
Now that we have our guide gather the clips and attach them to the pencil marks one by one. Ensure that the clips are holding the curtains in place and that you are clipping a sufficient amount of fabric. Doing so will ensure that the curtain doesn’t fall off when it’s time to hang them.
Step 4: Hang your curtain
We’re almost done with learning how to hang curtains with clips. Once you’ve secured the ring clips on the fabric, slide the rings onto your rod. Attach the finial at the end of your rod and hang it onto your brackets. Adjust and style your curtains as you please.
Why use clip rings?
Clip rings let you open and close your drapery with ease. The clips attached to the top edge of the curtain secures the fabric without causing damage. The rings will let you slide it across the rod, perfect if you have a habit of moving your drapes from time to time.
Rings also add length to your curtains. If you prefer your curtains lightly kissing the floor instead of hovering a few inches above it, hanging them with clip rings is an immediate solution. The fabric hangs an inch or two below the drapery rod, allowing it to brush against the floor lightly.
You don’t have to worry about time-consuming or costly alteration measures to achieve your desired length. Purchase a decent-sized ring that can add about an inch or two of size to your curtain.
Can I use clips on all curtain types?
Clips have fantastic practical benefits and can be used to hang any curtain. The most common way to use them is by clipping the top edge of any curtain. However, we get that the look of visible rings hanging on rods doesn’t exactly please everyone.
Fortunately, there is another way to use curtain clips to give your window treatments a different look. Instead of clipping the top of the fabric, pinch the rear side of your curtain and use the clip to hold it in place.
You can move it further down the curtain’s top hem so that there is an excess fabric covering the ring and the rod itself. With this method, you can achieve a back tab curtain look that creates an illusion of a curtain that is floating.
Just make sure to keep the consistency when attaching your clips. If you’re hanging back tab curtains, it’s easier to maintain the intervals. Attach one clip at every tab to make natural and clean pleats. Skip two tabs if you want wider pleats on your curtains.
How to style clipped curtains
Whether you’ve clipped your curtains at the top or rear parts of the fabric, you can still add a bit of style to make it look neat and elegant. Get your fabric steamers or straighten out any wrinkles that may appear visible.
You can also create natural and elegant folds that will make your window curtains even more attractive. If you’re clipping regular curtains (those without back tabs), you can make pleated curtain panels by clipping a bit of fabric behind the curtain.
Use an iron or steamer to define the folds of your curtain. Pleats are a great way of giving your room a classic and relaxed look. Pinch pleats never go out of fashion and can match both formal and casual interior decorations.
