There are different ways on how to fix computer chair. This article is here to guide you through them.
Office chairs use pneumatic cylinders to control the height through pressurized air. The cylinders of these chairs usually fail within a few years because the seals cannot consistently maintain pressure.
While you can buy a replacement cylinder, it can be expensive, so you might also buy a new one. However, you can also learn how to fix computer chairs to save some money.
Fixing The Computer Chair
Method #1. Hose clamp method
Step #1. When you use the hose clamp method, start by sliding the plastic skirt off the cylinder until the metal cylinder underneath becomes visible. Set your chair to your preferred height. This repair will keep you from adjusting the height of the chair after, though, so make sure you are comfortable with the height you choose.
Step #2. Wrap a hose clamp around the cylinder. Use a two-centimeter hose clamp from a hardware store.
Loosen the screws of the hose clamp and pull out the belt end. Wrap the clamp loosely around the metal cylinder.
Step #3. Improve the grip of the clamp so that it can hold the chair up. To give the clamp a better surface grip, wrap a strip of rubber or duct tape around the cylinder. Do this at the highest visible point possible.
Step #4. Tighten the hose clamp as far as you can. Place the hose clamp up to the top of the cylinder. Make sure that the chair is at the correct height before you fasten the clamp.
Step #5. Test the chair to make sure that it does not slide down past the clamp. If the chair is the wrong height, you should move the clamp higher or lower. If the clamp slides off, you may add more rubber to improve the grip.
Method #2. PVC pipe method
Step #1. In using the PVC pipe method, measure the chair’s cylinder. Pull the plastic skirt cover over the metal cylinder and estimate the diameter by holding a ruler across it horizontally.
Measure the length of the cylinder at the perfect height of your chair. While you don’t need an exact measurement, you can calculate the diameter from the circumference of the cylinder if you want to be more precise.
Step #2. Get a length of PVC pipe that can fit over the pneumatic cylinder. The pipe should be around the same size as the cylinder or slightly larger.
For most models, a tube that is 3.8 centimeters in diameter can work well. The pipe does not have to be the exact length, especially if you find it easier to work with smaller portions. You can quickly work on the PVC pipe at home.
Step #3. Saw through the PVC pipe lengthwise, ensuring that the pipe is slit open, not split into two pieces. For this part, remember to wear a mask to avoid inhaling irritating particles.
Step #4. Snap the pipe onto the metal cylinder. From the slit side, push the PVC pipe against the cylinder to snap it around.
You can secure the pipe with duct tape if you feel this is necessary. This process should be able to hold the chair in place.
Step #5. Add more pipe to increase the height of the chair. You can’t lower the chair again without removing the pipe, so make sure you set your chair to the perfect height or cut the pipe into smaller pieces to make it more adjustable to you.
Other Issues And Fixes For Your Computer Chair
Squeaky computer chair
Older computer chairs tend to become squeaky. While this can be embarrassing, it is very easy to fix.
Turn the chair upside down. Use a screwdriver to loosen up the nuts, bolts, and screws.
After, spray a lubricating oil on the mechanisms and wipe them dry with a rag. Tighten the nuts, bolts, and screws again and test whether or not the squeaking has stopped.
Wobbling computer chair
Wobbling chairs may be caused by faulty control mechanisms or the chair base. To address the problem, check which is causing the trouble:
- Chair base – Turn the chair horizontally, so the casters and the base of the chair are not touching the floor.
- Control mechanism – Pivot the seat from side to side, putting pressure on the sides of the seat. If the seat wobbles where the metal cylinder and control mechanism meet, it is likely that the control mechanism is faulty, and you will need to replace it.
Dirt and lint can get stuck between the wheel of the computer chair. To fix the issue, you have to turn your chair upside down and spin the wheels to get the larger pieces of goop out. After, clean out the individual wheels for the hard-to-reach dirt, and wipe the wheels clean with water or alcohol.
