How to Cut Swag Curtains: A Guide for Beginners

Swag curtains are a great way to add some style and elegance to your home. They can be hung as decorative pieces, or they can be used as room dividers. If you have never cut swag curtains before, don’t worry! This blog post will give you all the information that you need on how to cut swag curtains and create beautiful swags for your home.

We will go over how to measure and cut fabric so that it hangs evenly on each side of the window, how much fabric is needed for different sized windows, and how to get the most out of your purchase by using leftover fabric from other projects!

Steps on How to cut Swag Curtains

Step #1. Measure the window from sill to top, and add five inches.

Step #2. Cut your fabric a little longer than this measurement so that it will drape evenly on each side of the window when hung.

Lay one end of the fabric over the other (right sides together) where they meet at the center point and pin them securely in place.

Step #3. Cut the fabric on either side of where they are pinned together so that you have two pieces in total, both matching each other’s measurements.

Step #4. Make sure to leave a ½ inch seam allowance at the top and bottom of your cut! Lay one piece (or half) flat with its right side up towards you, and the other (or second half) with its wrong side up.

Step #5. Pin both pieces together on the sides where they meet in the center, making sure to leave a ½ inch seam allowance at each end of your pins.

Step #6. Stitch these two seams from one piece’s edge to the corresponding point on the opposite piece until you’ve stitched all the way around.

Step #7. Trim your corners as much as possible (you can always trim more later!) and then cut off any excess fabric that’s sticking out on the open, unsewn edge of each side.

Step #8. Turn one half inside out so it’s wrong or the “wrong” side is now facing outward, and use a seam ripper to cut off the pins at each end. Repeat these steps for the other piece, and then turn your whole thing right side out! Measure the width and height of your window.

Multiply these two measurements together to get how much fabric you need based on the size of your window. If, for example, you have a 60 inch by 72-inch window (60 x 72 = 4320), then you will want at least 108 inches in length or (108 x 60 = 6480).

If you are using cotton fabric, then the width should be about four times your height. For example, if you have a 72 inch by 108-inch window (72 x 108 = 8640), then the length of each piece of fabric will need to be 288 inches or (288 x 72 = 22,336).

Step #9. For widths other than four times your height, you can use a ratio chart found online to figure out how much fabric will be needed.

Tips: for the best results with swag curtains it is recommended that you use cotton fabrics and line dry them to prevent shrinking. You should also iron your fabric before cutting to make sure that it is wrinkle-free.

What is the best way to hang a swag curtain?

You can use a curtain rod to hang your curtains, or you could also tie them back onto the window frame.

To make sure that they end up looking neat and tidy (especially for long swag curtains), it is recommended that you measure out how much fabric will be needed before cutting. The length of each piece of fabric should be twice the length of your curtain rod.

To make sure that you have enough fabric, it is recommended that you measure out four times as long as your window width before cutting

If you want a more dramatic look for your swag curtains, consider adding tassels or lace along the top edge of the curtains. You could also add tassels or lace along the bottom edge of the curtain to create a full, dramatic effect for your swag curtains.

What type of material should I use for swag curtains?

You can use any type of material for your swag curtains. The most popular materials are linen, cotton, silk, and polyester because they are lightweight and easy to work with.

Some people also like the idea of using lace or tassels in their window treatments but each option will have a different effect on how your curtains look.

It is important to consider the amount of light you are trying to let in and how much privacy you need for your window before making a decision on which material will work best for your needs.

The key with just about any type of curtain, swag or no, is knowing how long they should be so that  you don’t create a situation where the curtain is too short and lets in the light you may not want, or they are so long that it wraps around on itself.

Should I dry Clean my Swag Curtains?

You might also want to consider how often you plan on washing your curtains. If they’re going to be washed regularly, it may not make sense for them to go through the dry cleaning process where they are only cleaned once in a year or so but if they will be washed infrequently then this is an option that should be considered.
