How to Adjust Recliner Tension

One of the most important things to do with a recliner is adjust the tension. If you don’t, it will be too loose and uncomfortable for sitting in all day long or even just watching TV.

With this quick how-to guide, we’ll show you how to adjust recliner tension so that it can provide comfort for years to come!

How to Adjust Recliner Tension

Steps on Adjusting Recliner Tension

Step one: sit in the seat and lean back all the way. This is how you want to position your recliner when it’s not being used, so that if someone leans on it they don’t push themselves over. Make sure there are no obstructions behind or under the chair as this may be what’s causing the problem!

Step two: look at the recliner’s headrest and find the lever that controls how much tension is in it.

Step three: turn this knob forward to make your chair tighter or backward to loosen it up a little bit more. One way you can know if you’ve found the right spot is by sitting back down again; if the recliner’s headrest is at a comfortable level, you’re all set.

Step four: continue adjusting your recliner as necessary until it feels just right for you!

Your  headrest should be a comfortable distance from the back of your neck.

If you need to adjust it, these are steps for how to do so:

Step one: make sure there’s nothing obstructing behind or under the chair

Step two: find the lever that controls how much tension is in

the headrest and adjust it to your desired setting

Why is my recliner so hard to close?

This sounds like it could be a problem with your recliner’s springs. Springs are what make the chair go back up when you want to get out of it. When they’re too taut or not tight enough, closing and opening can become difficult due to undesired resistance from the spring tension; if this is happening, these steps should  help.

Step one: take off your recliner’s cushions by removing the screws from each side of them (you should have these in a little baggy somewhere).

Step two: remove the caps on top of both springs with a Phillips head screwdriver, and use pliers to turn them counterclockwise until they’re  at the desired tension.

Step three: put your cushions back on and enjoy!

If you’re having trouble with one side, try turning the other spring counterclockwise to adjust it as well; usually they’ll both need adjusting if one of them is too tight or not tense enough. It really helps keep things running smoothly when you do this maintenance.
