However, if an employer offers its employees paid parental leave benefits (which would include maternity leave), then state law limits how much time off is allowed for newborn parents.
The maximum length of a maternity or paternity leave in Illinois is four months when combined with other types of job-protected leaves like sick days and vacation days that are accrued while on the job.
If both parents have access to these types of paid family medical average weekly wage, they can use them at their discretion without needing approval from anyone else during this period.
Although it’s possible for one parent to utilize all four months, many employers offer shorter terms so parents can use the weeks more selectively.

How long should you bind your belly after birth?
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), as long as possible. At least until a baby is breastfeeding well and gaining weight, which generally takes about 40 days.
They recommend an initial four hour period of skin-to-skin contact immediately after birth, followed by continuous “rooming in” and early breastfeeding on demand.
After that first period of skin-to-skin contact, exclusive breastfeeding can continue for six months or more — with other food added only when the child begins to self wean around age two if not sooner
Does maternity leave start the day the baby is born?
Although this might be the case in many organizations, some companies have a different approach. Some of them start counting maternity leave from week 37 or 38 before birth and others don’t allow workers to take any time off until after giving birth.
Furthermore, there are even more firms that offer paid leave throughout pregnancy for women who experience complications such as severe morning sickness (hyperemesis gravidarum) or high blood pressure (preeclampsia).
As for paternity leave, it is offered by around half of American employers but usually only lasts one week which isn’t enough time for most fathers-to-be. How early can you commence maternity leave?
Maternity leave is a protected job entitlement in the United Kingdom, meaning that it cannot be prejudiced by your employer. It can begin as early as 11 weeks before the expected due date and lasts for up to one year after birth.
During this time you are entitled to Statutory Maternity Pay or Maternity Allowance (if eligible). You may also have the option of Shared Parental Leave but there are currently no statutory entitlements associated with this scheme yet so check out what’s available at your workplace first!
