How to make insulating curtains

Losing heat and gaining it via your windows happens to be ten times more than through walls in the exact location. The single-pane windows in the older traditional homes may lose even more heat energy than the newer homes with insulated windows, which are often double-paned.

However, the two types also allow frigid air to leave, which gives an opposite effect during summer. Trying to control the energy loss will need some insulating draperies. Instead of buying from the shelf some window coverings, you can save your money and make your own.

Step by step procedure on how to make insulating curtains

It would help if you start by getting the following materials and tools ready:

  • Insulative batting material
  • Decorative cover material
  • Wooden or metal curtain rod or dowel (You can choose a light bar like a quarter to half inches in diameter. Please note: you do not need this if you are making a side draw design.
  • Curtain rod brackets or dowel brackets
  • Curtain rings or shower curtain rings
  • Velcro
  • Sewing machine,
  • Thread
  • Pins
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure
  • Grommet punch set and grommets
  • Mounting board (equal horizontal length as curtain, 1″ x 2″s would work well. You also don’t need this if you are making the side draw design.)
  • Cap (it works to prevent a convection current) keeps air from flowing at the upper part of your window. Note: You only need this if you are using the side draw design.)

Step #1: Measure your windows so that you need treatments for using insulating curtains. Ensure that you carry out your measurements accurately to determine your curtain fabric yard.

Step #2: Get the batting material of your choice, including the decorative fabric material. Preferably, you should use sustainable and recycled material because using a sturdy fabric material that will not stretch or tear easily is ideal. Ensure that you wash the decorative fabric first before you make them into insulating curtains.

Step #3: Cut out your batting material and your fabric curtain accurately, following what you measured on your window. Give an allowance of up to 2 inches surrounding the area of your decorative fabric material. Keep in mind that it is better that you have a little extra fabric than not enough.

Step #3: How to make insulating curtains requires sewing. To begin your sewing, pin the curtain fabric to the batting material. This way, your sewing can be easier. Please note that your batting material must be facing the fabric material’s decorative side at this step.

Step #4: With a sewing machine, sew the curtain fabrics to the batting material. Join three edges by sewing them together; then, you expose the curtain’s exterior by flipping the curtain.

Step #5: On the edge, you did not sow, tuck in the rest of the material into the flipped curtain, and sew them together. As a result, the seam will be inside, and you will have a beautifully finished curtain.

Step #5: Create holes in your curtain fabric material along the top part of the grommets you are putting it into and hammer in your grommets to secure it in place.

Step #6: Now, sew Velcro onto both sides of your curtain panels that require you to seal on the wall. Place and fix the Velcro on the walls according to its work on the curtain panels. This process results in better insulating of your curtains.

Step #7: Fix in the curtain rods, slide in some rod rings onto the curtain hanging rod.

Step #8: Hang your newly made insulating curtains.

Step #9: You can add extra material used to make curtain ties if you have any left to tie back your curtains when you are not using them.
