Looking for how to make upholstered swivel chairs? This article will show you how! It provides an overview of how to make upholstered swivel chairs.

There are a few different methods, and we’ll cover them in this article. We also have some tips on how to get started with the process and what tools you’ll need.

Steps on Making Upholstered Swivel Chairs

Step 1. Cut the foam into a rectangle shape. The goal is to make it as wide as your chair seat and at least twice as long – so that you have enough for both sides of the backrest, but not any more than what’s needed. You’ll need to experiment with how thick to cut it, however, most people find it best to start with a thickness of about an inch.

Step 2. Cut the foam to fit your chair seat and backrest, as noted above. You’ll want it to be slightly smaller than how you measured in Step One so that there’s enough fabric for seams later on.

Step 3. Place one piece of the polyester batting down over the top of the backing fabric, and cut it so that there is an inch or two of excess on each side.

Step 4. Place the foam over top of this batting piece, with right sides together (so that you have a sandwich of polyester batting + backing fabric + foam), and pin in place as needed.

Step 5. Sew straight lines along your pinned edges all the way around your foam, leaving a hole in the corner of one side.

Step 6. Turn the chair seat right side out and place it inside of its newly made cover! You can either sew up that last opening or leave it unsewn for a cool look.

How do Swivel Chairs Work?

A swivel chair is a type of chair with at least one rotating wheel under the seat. The design allows an individual to spin around 360 degrees in any direction, allowing for more convenient conversation or movement while seated.

Swivelling chairs typically have a low back and high arms that allow you to lean your head on them – this helps the body to relax.

Swivel chairs are helpful for people who have trouble getting up from sitting positions and also help with circulation by providing a greater range of motion while staying seated, as well as taking pressure off the spine when leaning back in them.

How do you Turn a Recliner Into a Swivel Chair?

Step 1. Making your own swivel chair is a fun and satisfying project that offers you the opportunity to customize how it looks. The most common type of swivel chair has a small at the base with casters attached, which allows for 360-degree rotation. This design also includes an upholstered seat as well as arms on the side.

Step 2. If you have a recliner that no longer functions to its full capacity as a chair, it can be turned into an upholstered swivel chair by following these five steps:

Step 3. Remove the back of the armrest and remove any screws attaching them to the seat. Reattach with new swivel casters

Step 4. Remove the seat and cut out an opening for a swivel mechanism that is two inches larger than your original chair’s armrests in both width and depth. To provide stability, it is important to extend this hole by 12 additional inches on each side of the centre line concerning the front edge of your seat.

Step 5. Reattach the seat with screws and attach the swivel mechanism to it, making sure that when you look at how your chair is placed in a room (with the back of the armrest on both sides) it will be facing towards an opening or exit so as not to impede someone’s path.

Step 6. Place a layer of foam over the armrests and staple it to the underside of the seat, which will allow you to upholster a piece without worrying about how to attach it.

Step 7. Cut two pieces of fabric that are 36 inches by 48 inches and make sure one is longer than the other.

Step 8. Take your shorter piece, fold over the top third and staple it down to the underside of the seat, then fold over again so that you have a total of four layers. Fold your longer piece in half lengthwise, lay on top of fabric already attached to the bottom of the chair, make sure there are no wrinkles in how they sit underneath one another.

Step 9. Pin fabric to the underside of the seat; upholster the front and backside. Staple fabric on the bottom edge, wrap around sides so that they are flush with how it sits on top of the chair in front and at the back. Take a few staples along the top edge for extra durability.

Can You Turn a Chair Into a Glider?

A chair can be turned into a glider with some fabric and wood. The upholstered swivel chairs in this how-to are made from two large, flat pieces of plywood that the homeowner spray painted white or any other colour they wanted to match their space. These big panels were then cut down so they would fit the size of the chair.

Step 1. First, cut plywood to fit the width and length of the seat

Step 2. Measure how wide you want your fabric panels to be: most people use about three inches; then measure how tall you want them, also usually around three inches. Layout panel so that it is a rectangle shape with taller sides on top and bottom.

Step 3. Draw a line on the panel with how tall you want your fabric to be, and measure how wide it is so that your panels will fit together once cut out; then draw another rectangle shape inside of this one

Step 4. Cut the second outer line from both sides to create two new pieces. Now take these two pieces and  trim the top corners to create trapezoid like shapes

Step 5. Unfold one of these pieces, and cut a half-inch from each side; then fold it back on itself. Measure how wide you want your fabric to be: most people use about three inches; then measure how tall you want them, also usually around three inches.
